Food Group Puppets

Today was... "Dress Fancy" day for Stevenson Spirt Week!

Mrs. Grant challenged the class with this number puzzle. Print the numbers that come BEFORE and AFTER 41!  And they did it!!!

We pretended to be these puppet characters from the food groups. Some of the kids changed their voice and did a great acting job!!  They had to have the puppets talk and tell us their food name, which food group they were from, and should we eat something from that food group every day??? YES!! We learned they all have lots of good vitamins and minerals in them. All the puppets we saw were from the 4 four groups. (No junk food or once in a while foods.)

Canada Food Guide

Today we looked at the Canada Food Guide. We looked at the number of servings recommended from each food group - for 5 and 6 year olds. We looked at the pictures of suggested servings from each group. We also read the labels of some of the "groceries" we have in our class grocery store - and checked out how much sugar is in some of the foods. We noticed the food guide recommends drinking juice that is 100% juice (as opposed to just a juice beverage or drink which is not as healthy). We don't want to have too much sugar in the foods we eat!  We also talked about how we need to drink lots of water every day. Ask your child to tell you what he/she learned today!

More colour mixing

FOR Spirit Week today, students were invited to wear a hat or have crazy hair. Here are the kids who participated in our class.

We played a game that involved mixing different colours with Curious George, - then colouring a picture!  It was lots of fun!  You can find it HERE. and try it at home, too!

Using an eye dropper to mix different colours of water

We were identifying different types of food, and then sorting the foods into the 4 food groups. We also played a sorting game on the Smart Board, where we sorted into categories of either Fruits OR vegetables. Good idea to try this when you are grocery shopping with your child. Help them learn the names of various fruits and vegetables while doing something you do regularly! A great way to teach your child some new vocabulary!

Library

Today a group of students from the band at George Waters Middle School came to play a few songs for us. They told us about their instruments, and let us hear how each one sounded. There were 3 kids in the group that used to go to Stevenson School.

Centre Time....

Miss Janzen read us a story, then we went to find a book to borrow and take home to read.

The leprechauns were here!

Uh -oh!   We think we had a visit from some leprechauns on St. Patrick's Day! We weren't at school to catch or see one on Friday, but today we found our room was messed up, toys all over, and some evidence of leprechaun type of things left around the room!!  And... we each found a chocolate gold coin in our lockers!!
------------------------------------------------------
Today we started with the letter /L/  in the middle of several lines. We had to figure out what letters came before and after L. We did it!

This young man read a book to our class. (We called him our guest reader, even though he is in our class!) He did a terrific job!

Here is who dressed up as one of their favourite characters today.

During centre time, he used different types of blocks to create a scale. He said he could make it balance, and he did!

EARLY DISMISSAL TOMORROW!

Thanks to all the families who made time to come to the school to celebrate your child's learning on Thursday evening or Friday. The children were excited to show you around our room and share some of their learning with you. It is nice for the kids to see that you value and support what they do at school every day.

The fundraiser to support families dealing with cancer, will continue for the rest of the week. Each day this week, for $1, students may buy a treat at recess time. (Tomorrow there will be popcorn and juice for sale, $1 each)

IF you were here on Thursday or Friday, you saw the notes posted around the school about Spirit Week. Tomorrow is pajama day. You are invited to wear clean, fresh pajamas to school (not the ones you just slept in).

Tints

Yesterday we cut out 5 shamrocks of different sizes, and then glued them onto another paper, in sequence of size. Today we painted them. We started out by painting the biggest shamrock green, then tinting the paint with white, to paint each shamrock a lighter shade of green. We learned adding white to a colour makes the colour lighter!
